Plot :
Set in northern England during the 1984 miner's strike, Billy Elliot tells the story of a young working-class boy who chooses not to follow his widowed father's instructions to train to be a boxer. Instead, fascinated by the ballet class sharing the same building as his gym, Billy hangs up his gloves to pursue dreams of being a dancer. But even as he discovers his virtuoso gift for ballet he must hide his triumph from his father and brother -- both miners on strike struggling to keep food on the table.

This strike was a major industrial action affecting the British coal industry. It ended with the defeat of the miners and significantly weakened the British trade union movement. It was a major political and ideology victory for Margaret Thatcher, known as "the Iron Lady", and the Conservative Party. But this conflict exposed deep divisions in British society and caused considerable bitterness (amertume) in Northern England and South Wales.

Coal was a nationalized industry managed by the National Coal Board (NCB).
In 1984, the government wanted to close 20 coal mines because they said they were unprofitable. But 20,000 jobs would be lost and many communities would lose their primary source of employment. So miners began strike action.
In March 1984, Arthur Scargill, president of the NCB, declared the movement to be a national strike.
Then followed a period of mass picketing, with numerous violent confrontations between the strikers and the police.
Life during this period was difficult and all the mining communities suffered from extreme poverty. The miners who decided to go to work were called "scabs" or traitors by the strikers and were often rejected by their communities.
The strike ended in March 1985. The end of the strike was felt as a terrible blow to loyal NCB members.

Lyrics of London calling:

London calling to the faraway towns
Now war is declared - and battle come down
London calling to the underworld
Come out of the cupboard, you boys and girls
London calling, now don't look to us
Phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust
London calling, see we ain't got no swing
'Cept for the ring of that truncheon thing

The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in
Meltdown expected, the wheat is growing thin
Engines stop running, but I have no fear
Cause London is drowning and I, live by the river

London calling to the imitation zone
Forget it, brother, you can go at it alone
London calling to the zombies of death
Quit holding out - and draw another breath
London calling - and I don't wanna shout
But while we were talking I saw you nodding out
London calling, see we ain't got no high
Except for that one with the yellowy eyes

The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in
Engines stop running, the wheat is growing thin
A nuclear error, but I have no fear
Cause London is drowning and I, I live by the river

Now get this
London calling, yes, I was there, too
An' you know what they said? Well, some of it was true!
London calling at the top of the dial
And after all this, won't you give me a smile?
London Calling

I never felt so much alike, like-a, like-a...
